- Summary
-
- Compiled by Charleston Postmaster Edmund P. Grice, these twelve scrapbooks begin September 27, 1946, and end December 12, 1959. They contain mostly newspaper clippings from Charleston, S.C., newspapers, but include a few original photographs, programs, a first day issue stamp, newsletters, magazine articles, and clippings from other newspapers as well. The great majority of subjects are post office related; there are news stories on various post offices, and post office employees from across the state and the nation, with most relating to Charleston. Many clippings deal with issues somehow related to post office business, such as the naming of streets, mail theft, post office employee conventions, postal rate hikes, effects of holidays on postal service, etc
- Many clippings document the changes in Charleston in these years -- such as the building of apartments, shopping centers, the north bridge across the Ashley, and a new railroad passenger station. Subjects also include changes in zoning, rent control, the Charleston municipal yacht basin, the Charleston municipal airport, and attempts at integrating the Charleston municipal golf course, as well as the destruction and renovation of local structures. Some articles deal with postal and stamp history, both local and national; there are profiles of many postal employees across the state, periodic articles on Melvin Purvis, golfer Moultrie McKevlin, and articles written on related subjects by J.V. Nielsen and Warrington Dawson. There are numerous articles documenting marriages, deaths, retirements, appointment, and other events involving postal employees and their families in Charleston, South Carolina, and the nation
