- These three scrapbooks appear to have been compiled for the City of Charleston to document activities of the city government--especially those of a financial nature, such as audits, bond issues, taxes, etc. The articles, mostly chronologically arranged, are from the Charleston News and Courier and the Charleston Evening Post, often notated with handwritten dates of the clippings. The scrapbooks may have been compiled by Edmund P. Grice, a city alderman and a holder of various positions within numerous government bodies
- Aside from financial stories, there are hundreds of articles on issues important to the city--festivals, trials of local officials, development, zoning and slum clearing issues; historical pieces; printed minutes of city council meetings; articles on local office holders; visits by dignitaries such as President Franklin Roosevelt, and others; road building, water works, other public improvement issues; and related articles about the area. Many of the articles are illustrated with photographs of buildings no longer standing, and pictures showing the development of industries, such as West Virginia Pulp and Paper Mill, and the construction of the Edisto Tunnel bringing water to the City of Charleston. There is much on Mayor Burnet Rhett Maybank, as well
