- Summary
-
- These 10 scrapbooks, spanning the dates August 1934-July 1941, were compiled by Edmund P. Grice (1890-1961). Grice served as alderman from Ward 5 in the City of Charleston and a Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee under Mayor Burnet R. Maybank. In 1933, he became director of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration of Charleston County, later becoming district manager and field representative for the Works Progress Administration. These scrapbooks document these aspects and interests of his life; they are labeled 'personal' to differentiate them from scrapbooks he compiled on City government, Public Relief, and the Post Office (he became postmaster in 1946.)
- The clippings in these scrapbooks are almost entirely from the Charleston News & Courier and Charleston Evening Post; there are some articles from other newspapers as well, including the Greenville Piedmont, Carolina Free Press, Charlotte (NC) News, the PeeDee Advocate and other South Carolina newspapers. Subjects include Democratic Party politics, primaries, general elections, various office holders and candidates, public relief, visits of dignitaries (President Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Hopkins & others) to Charleston, gambling raids, SC Masonic history, the election and inauguration of Burnet R. Maybank as governor, public health, charges of election fraud, "Jeffersonian Democrats" in support of Wendell Willkie, and numerous other topics
