Summary
It's autumn 1912, and America is embroiled in a bitter, four-way presidential race that has been called the most thrilling election in United States history. Making a bid for an unprecedented third term, Theodore Roosevelt criss-crosses the country on a ferocious whistle-stop tour, drawing enormous, adoring crowds. In New York City, former saloonkeeper John Schrank is obsessed with the unfolding campaign. Not only does the fanatical loner find Roosevelt's lust for power un-American, he is convinced that the nation is teetering on the brink of civil war and foreign invasion. Answering a "divine summons," Schrank buys a revolver and stalks the Bull Moose across eight southern and Midwestern states. Three times he comes within striking distance but fails to execute his plan. Then, on October 14, in Milwaukee, he confronts his quarry again. Based on contemporary newspaper reports, police interrogations, and eyewitness testimony, this book is a day-by-day, minute-by-minute account of the attempt on Roosevelt's life
