Summary
On July 2, 1822, Denmark Vesey, a formerly enslaved man, was hanged in Charleston, South Carolina. He was convicted of plotting what might have been the largest insurrection against slaveholders in US history. Witnesses claimed that Vesey appealed to numerous biblical texts to promote and justify the revolt. While sentencing Vesey to death, Lionel Henry Kennedy, a magistrate at the trial, accused Vesey not only of treason but also of “فٰٰمٍِٰىهَ ٰ ُمِْمْٰ ٰوم ٱفكمْل <U+0077>لُْٱ نُ الُ ىَٰ ُف ٱفكَٰى َُن ُْكىْمٍٱ نُ ٰوم قفٌكمًٱٰ و<U+0075>م.” ؤمفٍَ ًْضمٱم”’ٱ آىقمٌ ٰمٱٌٌ ٰوم ٱٰ”ُْ نُ ٰوىٱ مٍٍَُُٰٱ ٰىْف،ٌ م٬فىٍىَهَ ٰوم مٌُْ نُ ٱكىِْٰ<U+0075>فْ ٌىَٰممِْْٰفٰى َُى َٰوم لمفل”ٌ ٱْٰههمٌ فهفىٱَٰ ءمٍىْكف َ<U+0077>وىٰم ٱ<U+0075>مِْفٍك” فلَ ىٰٱ قْٰف ٌمنَكُْممٍَٰ. تممْ”ٍ سكوىمِِ ْقىْهَٱ ٰوم ٰىْف ٌفلَ ىٰٱ فنٰمفٍْٰو <U+0076>ى<U+0076>ىل”ٌ ٰ ُىٌنم، لفْ<U+0077>ىهَ َُكُْٰ لكُ<U+0075>مٍَٰٱ، مِٱْفَُ ٌمٌٰٰمٱْ، ٱمٱٍَُْ، ٱمِمكومٱ، فلَ ملىٰىُْفٱٌ. بم ٱوُٱ وُ ضمٱم” كفٍُِمْل مِمٌُِ نُ ءنىْكف َلمٱكمَٰ <U+0077>ىٰو مٱَفٌ<U+0076>مل ةٱفْمىٌٰمٱ ى َٰوم آىقمٌ، <U+0077>وىمٌ وىٱ فكك<U+0075>ٱمٱْ ُِْٰفْ”مل فٌَِٰفٰى َُُمَٱْ فٱ قممَ<U+0076>مٌَُٰ قىقىٌكف ٌفِٰىْفكْوٱ مْٱٱَُِىقمٌ ن ُُِْْىلىهَ مْىٌهىُٱ ىٱَْٰكٰى َُٰ ُٰوم مٱَفٌ<U+0076>مل. طوفٰ ممٍهْمٱ ىٱ ف َم٬ٱٌُِى<U+0076>م ُِْٰفْىٰ نُ ف َفَٰمقمٌٌ ٍكىٰ” ى َٰوم هىْٱِ نُ فْكىف ٌٰم،ُْْْ <U+0076>ىمٌُكَم، فلَ كَُٰملَىهَ <U+0076>ىٱىٱَُ نُ قىقىٌكف ٌْٰٰو. سومللىهَ ىٌهوٰ َُٰوم <U+0075>ٱمٱ نُ ٱكىِْٰ<U+0075>مْ ى َءمٍىْكف’ٱ ُْٰقمٌل فْكىف ٌوىٱٰ”ُْ، ؤمفٍَ ًْضمٱم”’ٱ آىقمٌ لفْ<U+0077>ٱ <U+0076>ىٰف ٌمٌٱٱٱَُ ن ٍُْف ٰمىْْقمٌ مٍٍَُٰ ى َٰوم فَٰى’َُٱ فِٱٰ، مفَقىٌهَ <U+0075>ٱ ٰ ُكنََُُْٰ فْكىٱ ٍفلَ مْىٌهىُٱ لىٱكلُْ ٰلُف” <U+0077>ىٰو مْمَ<U+0077>مل <U+0075>هْمكَ” فلَ <U+0075>لَمٱْٰفلَىهَ
