Summary
Frank McAllister has become wealthy in England, where he has lived for thirty years. But more and more he feels alienated in his adopted country. His thoughts are pulled toward his youth in South Africa as he prepares to visit the house he keeps in Cape Town. He'll be showing the country to his new lover for the first time and they'll bbe joined by their respective children, coming together as a reconstituted family. South Africa is rich with family history for Frank. He is a descendant of the Boer leader Piet Reteief, who was murdered along with all his followers by the Zulu king Dingane in 1938. Retief has been an icon to Afrikaners ever since. Yet something rotten in this myth still seeps through the family line, and there is violence now that still looms. ---copied from book cover
