Summary
"This study represents an attempt to trace the process by which a part of the piedmont South was populated. Eighteenth-century Rowan County embraced the entire northwestern quarter of North Carolina prior to 1770; however, only that portion lying between the Yadkin and Catawba rivers is considered in this study. Primary emphasis is placed upon the identity, origin, and location of the original settlers, although considerable attention is also given to those factors which most strongly influenced the settlement process. Geography, economic conditions in England and the colonies, social and religious motivation, the abundance of cheap land, and international conflict are among the determinants considered. Finally, an attempt is made to indicate the character of the initial settlers, as well as how and to what extent the frontier community was organized and supervised."--Pref
