"The annual lists for the years 1758-1786 are housed in the Clerk's Office of the Loudoun County Courthouse at Leesburg, Virginia. They consist of 1,279 handwritten pages of varying sizes and are numbered and arranged in chronological order. They all, however, show the ravages of time. Some are dated inaccurately and many years have missing parts. After some rearrangement and careful editing, these lists form the basis of the index which follows.... The names of slaveholders and slaves included in the second compilation have been extracted also from the original unpublished lists of tithables for Loudoun County, Virginia, 1758-1786."--Introd
