Abstract
"The Hampton-Preston Mansion in Columbia, South Carolina is a historic house museum where scores of visitors tour every year. The museum illustrates the property's history dating back to the early Antebellum South. However, what is portrayed to visitors is in part a fabrication due to a systematic disconnection between the physical and cultural landscapes over the course of the last half of the twentieth century. Using archaeology, anthropological and cultural geography theory as a tool, this thesis intends to provide physical evidence for past landscapes at the property and ultimately provide a venue to reconnect the physical and cultural landscapes."--Leaf vii
