The daughter of a Philadelphia lawyer, Emily Wharton married Charles Sinkler in 1842 and moved to a Eutaw Plantaion, a cotton plantation on the Santee River sixty miles from Charleston. Her letters to family members in Philadelphia provide a window into the antebellum South and South Carolina during the Civil War
