Summary
"The South Carolina 26th Infantry Regiment was organized at Charleston, South Carolina, in September, 1862 from a consolidation of the 6th and 9th Infantry Battalions because the two battalions were essentially wiped out in that first summer of fighting in Virginia. The new regiment was transferred out west where it participated in the siege of Jackson, MS, then to South Carolina for the Siege of Charleston. After the fall of Charleston, the 26th was transferred back to Virginia where it participated in the Petersburg Seige and the Appomattox Campaign."--, from back cover
