"This bibliography is divided into five large sections. The first contains guides to research, bibliographies, lists and registers important to genealogical research, and historiography. The second part contains works on the chronological history of Charleston and its vicinity. Items here are arranged by periods of history. The third part consists of subjects in alphabetical order from architecture to weather. The fourth is biography, first collective then individual. The fifth section is local history in alphabetical order by place name. Finally, there is a combined index including authors, subjects, and outstanding titles. At the first of each division of this bibliography, the most outstanding works in that section lead the list and are noted in large print."--Preface, p. ix
