"The Sullivan Tabby Point Ruin archaeology project on Callawassie Island, South Carolina is designed to discover the date, function and original builder of the remains of the tabby ruins (38BU70) of antebellum and possibly colonial origin. The archaeology aspects of the investigation are reported in a companion document to this one prepared by Stanley South and Michael Stoner in SCIAA Research Manuscript Series 233 (2006). This history report provides the bulk of the historical background on site 38BU70 to assist in understanding and interpreting the archaeology data. It attempts to catalog all of the earlier known owners and occupants of the site, their activities and objectives in so far as current research permits. At the present moment, not all potentially relevant historical material, both in manuscripts and records, has been located or reviewed; and as such, this report should be viewed as a snapshot of a work-in-progress. The report covers the prehistoric period evidence of Callawassie Island, roughly 5000 years, and chronologically through successive visits and/or occupations from the early proprietorial years of colonial South Carolina through a steady progression of single settler owners right down to recent modern times, covering 300 years or so virtually in continuous fashion."--P. xi
