Summary
"This work is about six young US Army pilots and green officers, all between 20 and 21 years old, arriving in Vietnam where they each become men, highly skilled pilots, and proficient officers within a few months. None of them will be the same after their first combat tour in Vietnam.... This book is about Army aviators (commissioned officer pilots and warrant officer pilots) and their enlisted (private through specialist 5 and noncommissioned officer (NCO-sergeant) door gunners and crew chiefs in Vietnam. It is also about the unbreakable bond they formed with their aviation warrior and maintenance team mates and the combat, combat support, and combat service support troops they supported.... This book is not a history book, but there is much historical and accurate information in this work and the letters that introduce each chapter. Except for Chapter 2 which contains no aerial combat mission, the 'true war story and aerial mission' in each chapter ... is nonfiction .... The letters that introduce each chapter are fiction, but those letters are the kinds of letters many aviation soldiers wrote to each other during their combat tour in Vietnam.... Each letter includes much factual information about Vietnam and its history, climate, culture, geography, religions, and character. The letters also include much factual information about America's war in Vietnam, our troops, the stress and emotions our troops felt, the weapons used, and the units and places these soldiers were assigned to."--Prelude
