English baron Lynx de Warenne desperately wants a child, but is both afraid to love and afraid that he is unable to sire a child. When he is sent to secure a castle in the Scottish borderlands, he takes advantage of the Scottish legal custom of handfasting to live with the castle steward's youngest daughter for a year and a day to see if they can produce a child before marrying her despite the fact that she is a commoner and terrified of him
