Summary
Minik, his father and four others were brought to New York in 1897 by the American explorer, Robert Peary. They were presented to the American Museum of Natural History as one of six Eskimo "specimens." Minik's father and four others died quickly from exposure to strains of influenza. Minik spent his first twelve years in New York being examined by doctors, scientists, and a paying public. He left New York to return to his homeland in the Arctic in 1909. Unable to acclimate himself to life there, he returned to the United States in 1916
