Review
These catalogs of significant and representative works in the collections of two fine museums are useful for their wide coverage of American art. In the Munson-Williams-Proctor (Utica, N.Y.) catalog, we find a very browsable overview of American painting from 1720 to 1984, depicted in 100 examples from the museum's collection. The excellence of the reproduction is matched by that of the page-length critical analyses of each work by scholars who place it and its artist in the broad context of American painting. The Columbus catalog offers illustrations of 86 key paintings and objects from the museum's collection, accompanied by brief biographies of each artist and critical interpretation. Following is documentation of each work shown, complete with its ownership over time, exhibition history, and bibliographic references. Both catalogs set out to showcase a collection and depict, by example, the progression of American art. Their broad coverage and the quality of their critiques recommend them for public, academic, and museum library collections
